OUR GOALS & OBJECTIVES
Our goals & objectives are based on Empowering Learners by the American Association of School Librarians which states that successful school librarians “empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information."
GOAL: Prepare students for life-long learning.
Objective: Students will be invited to pursue their interests and their faith. They will be explicitly taught how to seek information via an array of sources, based on grade level curriculum expectations. Students will also see life-long learning modeled in our own inquiries and willingness to learn alongside them and their teachers.
Related services: Collaboration, Reference & Readers' Advisory, Centers
GOAL: Teach students informed decision-making.
Objective: Students will successfully discern the validity of information sources through exposure to and direct instruction concerning primary sources via grade-appropriate scaffolding. They will also practice gathering and using information to guide their decision-making when using the media center to browse, choose and borrow independent reading materials.
Related services: Literacy Support, Centers, Reference & Readers' Advisory
GOAL: Empower students with the joy of reading:
Objective: Students will become confident explorers, browsers, and readers of titles that they choose, with guidance when requested or needed to avoid frustration - which will lead to a more successful reading experience that fosters crucial motivation to keep reading. Students will enjoy a corporate read-aloud storytime built-in to most library lessons as well as the opportunity to read about and hear from published authors. The library environment will consistently demonstrate an attitude of service, faith, comfortable surroundings, and frequent rotations of enticing book displays.

GOAL: Instruct students in the use of information technologies:
Objective: Students will receive scaffolded instruction concerning digital citizenship. Gr2-8 students will become independent users of our online library catalog and successfully locate books on our shelves. All library lessons will eventually incorporate an interactive Promethean board. Emerging technologies will be investigated and modeled, “to reach learners, and to create virtual 24-7 access to the school library.” (AASL 2009, p.16)
