Sharing this book with 6-8 year olds recently has been a joy. At the end of the story, I teach them what a precept is and read some examples - that other children wrote - from the book, 365 Days of Wonder; Mr. Browne's book of precepts by R.J. Palacio. Then I encourage them to share a precept they already know, or to create one to inspire others. We've begun filling up our library bulletin board with these warm thoughts and will continue through the cold winter months. Many students want to add more than one! As the upper grades and Jr. High students rotate through the library they will also be invited to share a precept or two. If we run out of room on the bulletin board, we'll just post them on doors, and walls, and bookcases. Or maybe hide them inside books for someone to find one day when it gets checked out! Finally, it is my privilege to donate the new R.J. Palacio picture book to our library shelves in honor of the entire OLS School family with my wish for a very Merry Christmas! |
WHEN GIVEN THE CHOICE BETWEEN BEING RIGHT OR BEING KIND, CHOOSE KIND. This is the precept Mr. Browne shares with his students in the beloved chapter book Wonder by R.J. Palacio. The book, published in 2012, was & remains uber-popular. The movie, based on the book, opened in theaters during the Thanksgiving break. Perhaps you've seen the major marketing campaign with CHOOSE KIND all over t-shirts and coffee mugs? The message of the story is wonderful but neither the book or the movie is targeted at primary grade children. Luckily, R.J. Palacio solved that problem by writing and illustrating a brief synopsis of the story in her recent picture book, We're All Wonders.
