October is always fun since HallowREAD books are so popular and we have a lot of them! This year, it’s also HalloWRITE time because our neighbor, The Homewood Public Library, is sponsoring 2 writing contests for K-8 students: Here’s to an October full of spooky, silly, haunting, fun stories, poems, and books!

First, THANK YOU for supporting the library in Aug. and Sept. with magazine subscriptions and JClub purchases. We were able to pay for 125 NEW BOOKS with the proceeds from these fundraisers. In February we'll have our ADD A BOOK event and add more new books! Keeping our shelves full of relevant and interesting books for so many different grade levels is a challenge which is why the financial support makes such a difference. Again, thank you! Lessons this month have centered mostly around learning to navigate the shelves and match books to needs, interests, and levels. Circulation has been busier than ever and that is a GREAT thing. Also GREAT are our parent volunteers who get books back on the shelves so students can find them... again and again! So thankful for them.
And last but not least, I recently asked Faculty & Staff to share some of their favorite books with me via photos. Now, students are having great fun with this bulletin board in our Library Centers area, and many of those books are checked out. *Apologies if you can't read the title of the book in the photo - but the students can! ;)
Mrs. Litton and I are currently...
Wow, where did May go? It’s a busy time for everyone and somehow it got away and June is already here! Just a few important notes to share before we turn around and it’s August!
May everyone's summer be filled with rest, restoration, and reading of course!
These are the Ultimate Authors joining us this year and offering their books for sale:
Callie Chapman Callie Chapman was 6-years-old when she wrote Glitter the Unicorn in 2015! The story is about a unicorn named Glitter and her best friend Ellie who go on a magical adventure to Cotton Candy Land. Callie donates all of the profits from her book sales to Children’s Hospital of Alabama. Her first donation was in the amount of $3,500. She will be sharing her stories with us at UAD. Father Wilfred Emeh Our Lady of Sorrows Church’s very own Father Wilfred has a new book and will join us at UAD to share it! Born in The Republic of Cameroon, Fr. Wilfred served in a rural parish where he often walked several miles to bring the Gospel to village communities. Father’s book explores the fallen standard of traditional Christian family values as a result of the rise and the overuse of the new media. He narrates his ups and downs in his attempt to acclimatize in his new world. Rita Collins Rita is a Birmingham native with three grown kids who all attended OLS School. She is an educator, children’s book author, and publisher. Rita will be joining us at UAD and will feature her series of Eensy Weensy Books. Each story follows an animal or plant from egg, infant or seed, and children will learn that “all creatures great and small begin EENSY WEENSY.” Jo Ann Brown In her watercolor-illustrated book, Jo Ann Brown introduces us to Fat Tuesday, the character and the subject of this nonfiction work. This book helps readers understand the season. Jo Ann, a retired art teacher, will join us at UAD. Brother Leo Brother Leo is a UAD favorite and will join us again this year. He uses his creations and inventions to communicate the Catholic faith to children in this extension to his EWTN show “Hey Brother Leo!” Now that you've got some great new books from our book fair last week (or will have them soon!) perhaps you need space on your bookshelves and need to give away your gently used titles? You can help combat illiteracy in Alabama too! Look for the Birmingham Reads collection bins at OLS between now and Thursday, April 20th. Place your new or gently used early-readers, picture books, Gr. 2-5 chapter books & intermediate series titles in the bin and you're done! Also consider biographies, science-related books (K-6), how-to books, cook books, and SPORTS-related books. NOTE: Retail-toy-themed books, religious books, and board books are not accepted. Every useful book collected here will be delivered to Better Basics for their literacy programs serving children and families in Central Alabama.
More than 92,000 books were given away in 2015-16! For more info, visit http://betterbasics.org/programs/birmingham-reads/ Our 1st OLS School Usborne Book Fair for WeeK – Gr.8
