- THANK YOU! Our shelves and hearts are full! Thanks to all who were able to add a NEW book to our school library during our Feb. Add-A-Book. Every student benefits from your generosity when they check out that book. We’ll have a final tally next week but it’s safe to say that it’s probably close to 100 new books!
- Gr. 1-3: Sheila Booth-Alberstadt, (a local author from Fairhope, AL) is stopping by our library to read to Gr. 1-3 classes on Tues. & Wed. mornings next week. Your student is welcome to bring along any of her books that you might own for her signature!
- Gr. 3-5: Paperbag Book Club will host our 2nd meeting at Homewood Public Library this Tuesday after school. This month’s genre is FANTASY or SCI-FI! Students meet me in the OLS library after school and we walk over together. Pick up at HPL by 4:15pm. Click HERE for all of the details.

Each year we strive to update our library collection with great, NEW titles. To help make this possible, we host the Add-A-Book event around Valentines each year so students can show their school library some LOVE! THIS year, "Add-A-Book" is Feb. 6th–9th & here's how it works:
So, if you can help update our library by adding a wonderful NEW book, please print the pdf below and complete the permission slip so that your student can bring it to the library by Feb. 6th. And thank you for loving your school library!
Calling all 3rd-5th graders! Librarians in Homewood are pleased to invite you to an after-school bookclub unlike any before and it starts this month! The librarians choose the genre, but you (the student) can choose any title in that genre that you've read.
WHAT? Every month will highlight different genres. Our first meeting on January 17th will feature mystery & thriller titles. *Check our Destiny Quest front page "Resource Lists" for suggestions.
WHERE? Meet Mrs. Sullivan Jan. 17th in the OLS Library after school, then we'll walk across the street to join other Homewood students & librarians for bookclub from 3:30-4:30pm. It's free and no registration is required. So come to one, or some, or all of our meetings. Questions? Stop by the OLS library and let me answer them. ***************** Hope to see you Jan. 17th! ******************* 2017 is here and plenty of new digital developments have arrived with it. Each year, it seems that younger and younger children are being drawn to use digital technology of one sort or another. If that's got you wondering about the benefits versus risks, the "Tap, Click, Read" site has created a short quiz focusing on the three C's: Content, Context, and your Child.
Click HERE to find out your score. You might gain insight into some subconscious habits and reflect on ways to harness the power of those household digital devices for an even happier New Year! This book is a favorite in my family so it is with joy that I add it to our library as my gift this Christmas: The Story of Jesus as told in The Donkeys’ Tales by A.B. Colvin; illustrations by P.H. Carmichael "As a young donkey's mother recounts to him the story of the Great Miracle, he learns about the birth and early life of Jesus. From the nativity to the flight from King Herod through the desert to the Christ child's discourse with the teachers in the temple, the miraculous events of Jesus' childhood are recounted from the perspective of the donkey. Present at Jesus' birth and again on the occasion of his ride into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, the donkey is a scriptural witness to the life of Christ and provides a touching and inspired account of the story of Jesus.
*Endpages include music for an original song, “The Donkeys’ Tales.” May Christmas be WONDER-full for each and all of you! Ever thankful to be your School Librarian, Mrs. Sullivan We welcome all 1st - 8th graders to checkout library books to read during our Christmas break, with the caveat to keep track of them and check inside the back of the book before accidentally returning them to a public library. The card in the pocket on the inside back cover is a reminder that it is an OLS Library book (also the stamp inside both covers.)
The best thing to do is for students to keep their OLS books in their school bag whenever they're not reading them. WK4 and K students will not check out books to keep over the break since it is 2 weeks long. Notices for books that are now OVER overdue (and possibly lost?) will go home this week and will hopefully result in the return of those books since that is always better than paying to replace them. ALL BOOKS are DUE JANUARY 3, students' first day back. Speaking of books... stay tuned for my gift to our OLS family this year. And thank you for your interest in and support of our School Library!
Three of the most popular books from the "Everybody" section of our library (based on data from Sept.2015 - Sept.2016) have become our candidates for a K-8 "Election Day"! Each student will have an opportunity to cast his or her vote in the library for the "best" book on November 8th. Throughout the month of October, I'll be using the book Vote! by Eileen Christelow in Library Specials lessons to reinforce students' understanding about this important process in our country. BONUS: Mrs. Christelow is coming to OLS for a special Author Day in March 2017! Depending on the grade level, we will also discuss how media affects the way voters gather information about candidates. To that end, here is some information about our book candidates for Library Election Day 2016! "Ahhhh, feels good to be in Library Centers, let's do Buddy Talk!" I heard one 3rd grader say to his friend just yesterday. Buddy Talk is a conversation game that has proven popular with both boys and girls in our new Centers area this year.
Another super-popular choice when students have the opportunity to come to Library Centers are these blocks! Yes, students are still checking out books and reading, but public libraries have been getting on the Maker-Space bandwagon for years now, so this is our way of having a hands-on choice in our school library. Why maker-spaces? As School Library Journal said in it's 2015 "Maker" issue, 'making' sparks ingenuity in students! To read more, click here. It's been fascinating to watch students as young as 6 and as old as 12 sit with a few friends and build something together with the blocks. Today, these friends built a library! Isn't it wonderful? Meet graphic novel author & illustrator
Ben Hatke! When: Thursday, Sept. 29th, 6:00pm Where: Homewood Public Library. Click HERE for more information. I'm planning to bring our Zita books and his newest book, Little Robot, for him to sign. Books will be available for purchase as well. See you there! |
